Frankie McDermott

Frankie McDermott is the Chief Energy Delivery Officer at the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). He oversees Power Generation, Grid Assets (transmission and distribution), SMUD’s Sacramento Power Academy and the Commercial Development team. McDermott’s work is at the core of SMUD’s mission – generating and delivering reliable and affordable electricity to customers, with a focus on safety and environmental responsibility. The Chief Energy Delivery Officer is an executive-level position that serves on the Executive Management team. SMUD’s power generation facilities include hydroelectric, thermal and renewable energy assets. SMUD’s Transmission and Distribution grid assets include substations, telecommunications and metering, line assets, line crews and troubleshooters. Grid Assets plays an important customer-facing role and Customer Experience Excellence guides operational focus. This position is also the face of SMUD in the local development community through SMUD’s Commercial Development team. Prior to his current role, McDermott served as Chief Customer and Community Services Officer, leading SMUD’s $1.5 billion retail electric business, including customer operations, services, programs, marketing and communications.

Prior to that, he directed Enterprise Performance, where he introduced a process to measure SMUD’s business performance. Upon first joining SMUD in 2003, he held leadership positions in Supply Chain and General Services.

Before joining SMUD, McDermott held senior management roles in the semiconductor industry at NEC Electronics in Roseville, California and in Ireland. After engineering school in Ireland, he earned an MBA from Golden Gate University and completed the Berkeley Advanced Management Program at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
